INSTRUCTIONS FOR 8:30 A.M. USHERS

BEFORE SERVICE:

Note: 8:30 ushers are not responsible for setting up or taking down chairs.  Let others do that (for reference, seating chart is on right inside storage room for chairs and is also shown below in Figure 1).

1.      Please bring donuts, Oreo cookies, grapes, or other suitable snack.  (If you forget, emergency snacks are usually available in storage room across hallway from kitchen).

2.      Arrive at least 20 minutes before start of service, and find your name tags.

3.      Turn on lights, except for lights in drop ceiling, which should remain off.

4.      Unlock fellowship hall side and front doors by locking back panic bars with hex keys hanging beside doors.

5.      Set up and plug in coffee pot:

·         Coffee (use regular) is in cabinet to right of microwave

·         Use 2¼ cups of coffee grounds with coffee maker filled with about 40 cups of water.

6.      Make a pot of hot water on stove and put in the carafe labeled “Hot Water”

7.      Make 2 pitchers of lemonade:

·         Pitchers are in island cabinet nearest refrigerator

·         Use 4 scoops of lemonade per pitcher

·         Place pitchers in refrigerator during service

8.      Prepare tray to be placed next to coffee pot:

·         Dry coffee creamer

·         Fresh milk (if any is fresh in fridge)

·         Styrofoam coffee cups (in cabinet to right of fridge)

·         Tea bags (in cabinet to right of stove).

·         Sugar

·         Stirring sticks

9.      Bring cross, candles and offering baskets from storage room shelves and place as shown.

10.  Light candles

11.  On last Sunday of month, include 5-Cents-A-Meal collection baskets when that offering is to be received on the last Sunday of the month.

12.  On first Sunday of month, set out communion vessels and elements and baptismal font.

13.  Close door to hallway.

14.  Greet persons and distribute bulletins. Greet and offer a children’s bulletin to each child.

15.  Distribute receivers for the hearing-impaired, and instruct people on their use, if necessary.

16.  Be attentive to the needs of first-time and newer worshippers.

17.  Be prepared to set up more chairs if needed, but only while the congregation is singing and not during a prayer.

DURING SERVICE:

1.      Place sign outside side door instructing late-comers to enter through front door.

2.      Watch for late-comers, and make sure they receive a bulletin and are seated.

3.      If a member of the congregation leaves during the service, follow and offer assistance.

4.      Count the number of attendees and children in the nursery during the offering or singing.

5.      Be prepared to receive the offering baskets when they reach the back row, and bring them forward for the Prayer of Dedication at the end of the song.

6.      Take the offering baskets to the copying room, then:

a.       “face” the bills (same side up), checks, and envelopes

b.      find the manila envelope from the far right cabinets; put the offering in the envelope marked for the 8:30 service. The 5-cents-a-meal offering should be placed in a separate marked envelope.

c.       Place envelope in mail slot in door to bookkeeper’s room in church office.

d.      Count everyone in the nursery

7.      Record the attendance in the notebook located in the window nearest the closet in the Narthex.

8.      Return the offering baskets to the shelves on the right when entering the storage room

AFTER SERVICE:  

1.      Set out any goodies you might have brought (Not needed for summer service)

2.      Set out coffee/tea tray, hot water, and coffee pot

3.      Greet people as they leave, encouraging newcomers to stay for the fellowship time.

4.      Return offering baskets, cross, and candles to shelves in storeroom.
